Josephus was a Jewish historian
born just a few years after Paul's conversion. He lived
from around AD 37 to 100. He was very much a contemporary
of the early Church. His two major works were The
Antiquities of the Jews and The Jewish War.
The first link to the right contains quotes from
early writers about Josephus as well as a table comparing
their quotes to what we have today from Josephus' writings
about Jesus. The second link to the right contains selections from Josephus
regarding Jesus and other NT Characters. The third link
contains text of Josephus on the three major Jewish
sects (Sadducees, Pharisees, and Essenes) as well as
some writings about the destruction of the Temple in
70 AD. Next is a link to the text of Josephus' Discourse
to the Greeks Concerning Hades - it provides a First-Century
Jewish perspective on the afterlife. The Biblical authors
hold a highly consistent view with Josephus on this
topic. For the Complete works of Josephus, go to the final
link on the right.
