Apocryphal writings are basically literature
that did not make it into the canon of Scripture. The
canon of Scripture contains the 66 books of the Christian
Bible - no more, no less. Some apocryphal writings have
been deemed heretical while others just were not meant
to be included in the canon. For the purpose of my page,
I can only give you a brief overview of the text as
well as some relevant historical information. Also,
I will deal only with the New Testament Apocrypha. For
further study, I have two recommendations. The first
is to go to the Noncanonical
Homepage. This site has the full text as well as
some history. My other recommendation is the Two-Volume
set The New Testament Apocrypha edited by Wilhelm Schneemelcher.
In the right half of this table is what I have done.
The link is to an html file which will include a link
to its Microsoft Word text file. I hope that the overview
provided here can help you at least get an understanding
of what the early church may have been like.
